Mesothelioma - More Locations to Avoid
As we continue to look at the conditions that can lead to mesothelioma, we know one thing beyond a doubt - mesothelioma is the result of exposure to asbestos. However, we also understand based on what we've heard from clients that not everyone knows where asbestos can be found and how to avoid it. We continue our series of articles today by looking at additional locations to avoid in order to minimize your chances of exposure to this toxic substance.
Older Apartment Buildings
If you tend to live in apartments, you need to be aware that many of them were built more than 30 years ago. As a result, many of them, at least at one time, contained asbestos, as it was considered an acceptable substance at the time until reports began to surface about the link between asbestos and mesothelioma. Therefore, before you move into a new apartment building, be sure to ask the property manager about asbestos. If the building contained it at one time, make sure that it was removed before exposing yourself to it.
Older School Buildings
If you're about to enroll your children in a new school, you need to understand that older school buildings have gone through the same progression as older apartment buildings, in that asbestos was often used for insulation and other purposes at that time. School buildings are required to be up to code, like any other location, and the school administrators should be aware of any presence of asbestos, past or present. If the building contained asbestos at one time, ask for the dates that it was removed and for assurances that the building is safe.
Electrical Contracting
It's fun to see buildings being rebuilt for many reasons. Many people simply don't have the perspective of what goes into the "guts" of a building, and most are curious enough to take a look when the opportunity presents itself. Make sure that you use the utmost in caution before strolling through a building where the electrical work is being redone, because asbestos was at one time a common substance that was present in many electrical materials.
Overall, there are many other locations and otherwise-innocuous products that can or have at one time contained asbestos, and satisfying your curiosity or simply settling on a place to live or have your children educated is not at all worth the severe risk you could be taking.
