Mesothelioma Diagnostic Tools: CT Scan
Mesothelioma can be incredibly difficult to diagnose early. Unlike some other diseases, mesothelioma does not show any noticeable symptoms until the cancer is in an advanced stage of development. This often occurs 20-40 years beyond the moment of initial asbestos exposure. If you suspect that you have been negligently exposed to asbestos, visit a doctor to be examined.
A doctor has several different ways to determine whether or not you are suffering from cancer. CT scans are a new technology that lets doctors see the internal organs by using methods similar to x-rays. While x-rays and CT scans are very similar, a CT scan completely circles a person’s body to create a multiple images of the internal organs. X-rays, on the other hand, are stationary and only able to create one view of the inside of the body.
Using a CT scan, doctors are able to better inspect a certain area of the body. The scan will show whether or not a person has a tumor. The doctor can then precisely locate the tumor and proceed with further tests to learn more about the disease that caused the tumor to form.
In some cases, you may be required to drink a certain type of liquid that will block the radiation (x-rays) and leave a white color on the CT scan image. This liquid is often ingested orally, but can also be injected.
Undergoing a CT scan requires you to lie down on a table and then moved into a kind of large tube. This tube-like structure then rotates to scan your body. Once the scan is complete, a computer compiles the images to create a whole image of your internal organs. This image is then reviewed by a doctor.
